Bewdley WI has a number of activity groups which are greatly enjoyed and well subscribed by our members.
Our groups welcome new members and the creation of new activity groups is encouraged. Wherever possible we minimize any costs involved by sharing lifts and, where appropriate, meeting in members’ homes.
The following gives a flavour of what you can enjoy as a member of Bewdley WI.
The Walking Group has been “Walking and Talking since 2016” and has completed over 60 walks. The walks are varied and include visits to towns - Ironbridge and Stratford upon Avon - and walks in the countryside both local and a little further afield. Aiming to cater for a wide variety of abilities they usually walk for three miles or so, and with almost 20 members there is always someone to chat with. The Group meets on a Saturday morning once a month and walks always end with a stop for refreshments.
Our Book Club has also been active since the early days of Bewdley WI and recently completed their 75th read! To celebrate they had a lovely lunch before discussing the book. They meet on the fourth Monday afternoon of each month and any member is welcome to come along, even if they haven’t read the latest book. There’s no need to buy any of the books as they are provided by the library - the group provides them with a list of books they would like to read. There is always a lively and interesting discussion.
The Gardening Group looks after the planters outside St. George’s Hall and ensures they are always well cared for to welcome visitors to the Hall. No gardening experience is necessary, just enthusiasm. The group also makes visits to gardens including those taking part in the National Open Gardens Scheme. Visits have included Wharf House, Westwood House and Stottesden Open Gardens. There is always something new to learn and there is usually tea and cake available during visits.
The Art Group is a more recent creation. An accomplished local artist who is a member of Bewdley WI offered to lead a relaxed group to experiment in various mediums. This has proved very popular, and to date acrylics and a pottery painting session have been enjoyed. Absolutely no experience is necessary and although you may think you do not have any artistic talent at all, you will be amazed at the results. It is also very relaxing as everything else is forgotten about whilst concentrating on what you are creating. There is a small charge to cover the cost of materials.
Our newest group is the Craft Group which recently held its inaugural meeting. The group will meet regularly and already has lots of suggestions for projects. It is bound to be a popular group.
Finally, we also have a Bridge Group, but currently membership of this group is full as it was felt important for members to progress at a similar pace. However, those attending the group are full of enthusiasm for the game, which is proving both fun and challenging.
